A garage door opener not working can mean a dead battery or a burned-out motor. For Naperville homeowners, a few quick checks can narrow it down before anyone calls for service.
The first thing to check is power, so make sure the opener is plugged in and the outlet actually works. Garage outlets are often on a GFCI circuit, and a tripped outlet somewhere else in the house can shut the opener off. A tripped breaker is another common cause.
Next, test the wall button. If it works but the remote doesn’t, try a new battery in the remote, and if neither works, the problem is likely inside the opener itself.
Safety sensors are the next suspect when a garage door opener not working seems to have power. These small eyes sit near the floor on each side of the door. If one is bumped out of line, dirty, or blocked, the door may refuse to close or reverse right away. Many openers blink a light to show a sensor problem. Wiping the lenses and lining them up often fixes it.
Check the lock setting too, because many wall panels have a lock button that disables remotes and it’s easy to press by accident.
If the motor hums but the door won’t move, the drive gear may be stripped or the door may be too heavy because of a broken spring. That second case is a safety issue. The opener should be left off until a technician checks the springs.
A garage door opener not working after 15 years or so may simply be near the end of its life. Parts can be hard to find, and replacement may make more sense than repair.
